Mold Temperature Control: Thermocouple Placement and Controller Sizing
Consistent mold temperature is the foundation of repeatable part quality and predictable cycle time. It comes down to where you measure temperature and how you control it.
Thermocouple Placement
Place the thermocouple close to the cavity surface, in the steel, where it reflects the temperature the resin actually sees. A probe buried too deep reads lagged temperature; one too close to a cooling channel reads water temperature instead of mold temperature.
Controller Sizing
Size the controller to the heat load of the mold, not just the number of zones. Consider the mold mass, the cooling channel layout, and the required temperature range. An undersized controller cannot hold temperature under production heat load.
Cooling Channels
Balanced cooling channels distribute temperature evenly across the cavity. Uneven cooling causes warpage and longer cycle times.
