Punch selection in most shops is a reorder behavior: the last one worked, so order the same number. That is efficient right up to the moment the job changes and the part number does not. The Danly line covers several families for a reason, and they are not interchangeable by accident.
The Families
The Danly punch families run across Versatile, VersaPlus, Kommercial, TuffPunch, BallLock, Versatile Metric, and in-die tapping. Each covers a different combination of volume, geometry and duty.
- Kommercial covers the everyday jobs where a standard geometry and a sensible price point carry the work.
- Versatile adds geometry flexibility for jobs that need a configuration the plain lines do not offer.
- VersaPlus extends that flexibility further — the family to look at when the part shape is the constraint.
- TuffPunch is built for the heavy-duty end, where resistance to shock and tip load matters more than the lowest unit price.
- BallLock is the quick-change system: punches, retainers, die buttons and accessories including backing plugs and ball springs.
BallLock matters beyond convenience. A quick-change punch system converts a punch replacement into a minutes-long task instead of a die teardown, which is where the real cost of a failed punch usually lives.
Reading the Catalog Number
A ball lock punch number is five fields:
- Point diameter
- Head / body type code
- Body / point configuration
- Length
- Steel
The published example 12 HJB 50 300 M2 shows the shape: a point diameter, a head and body code, a body and point configuration, a length, and the steel. Read as five fields rather than one string, it is obvious when a reorder has drifted — a customer reading ‘close enough’ off a worn punch has often changed a field without knowing it.
The Steels
Danly punches are available in A2, M2 and PS4, hardened to RC 60–63. The choice follows the abrasive character of the material being punched and the volume of the run. A harder, more wear-resistant grade extends grind life; a tougher grade resists chipping where the geometry concentrates stress. Matching steel to the work is worth more than matching it to the price list.
The Retainer Side
Punches fail in pairs with their retainers and die buttons. A die button that is running at the clearance edge will wear a punch out early regardless of which family was specified. When you reorder a punch, it is worth a look at the button and the clearance at the same time.
Where Tooling Components Fits
Tooling Components supplies the Danly punch families, BallLock punches, retainers, die buttons and accessories, along with the backing plugs and ball springs that complete the assembly, plus fill-in special drawings when a geometry falls outside the catalogue.
Give us the point diameter, head and body type, body and point configuration, length and steel, and we will confirm the family and the number before it ships.
