Five properties determine graphite grade performance in EDM: Particle size directly correlates to achievable surface finish — smaller particles yield finer finishes; Density affects electrode wear rate, with higher-density grades lasting longer; Flexural strength determines how well thin features hold up during EDM; Electrical resistivity influences metal removal rate; and Ash content matters for precision applications — low-ash grades minimize contamination in the dielectric fluid.

Application Matching Guide

For roughing cavities in pre-hardened P-20 steel — use medium-grade graphite with large cross-sections and high amperage settings. For finishing fine detail in H-13 tool steel — switch to fine or ultra-fine graphite grades, lower amperage, and controlled pulse-on times. For deep ribs or thin wall sections — select high flexural strength grades (12,000+ psi) to resist breakage. For production EDM with long unattended runs — choose high-density fine grades that balance wear resistance with surface finish requirements.

Common Pitfall: Surface Finish Expectations

A common mistake is assuming that fine-graphite automatically produces fine finishes. The graphite grade sets the ceiling on achievable surface finish — but machine parameters, dielectric flushing, and electrode geometry all contribute equally. Even ultra-fine graphite will produce a rough finish if the EDM parameters are set for high metal removal rates.
