Punch Steel Selection: M2, A2, and PS4 at RC 60–63

The grade is half the punch specification

A punch number tells you the geometry. The steel tells you whether it will survive the job. Dayton's Ball Lock line is stocked in three common tool steels — A2, M2, and PS4 — generally hardened to RC 60–63. Choosing among them is a question of duty, not preference.

Reading a Ball Lock punch number

A Ball Lock punch number is built from five fields. A published example is 12 HJB 50 300 M2:

  • 12 — point diameter.
  • HJB — head and body type code.
  • 50 — body and point configuration.
  • 300 — length.
  • M2 — the tool steel.

Because the steel is a named field, reordering the right punch is a matter of reading the existing number rather than measuring a worn part.

Which steel for which job

The general logic maps directly to what each grade is good at:

  • M2 — holds red hardness to roughly 1000°F. A general-purpose choice and the standard answer for high-production machine work on mild and medium-carbon stock.
  • A2 — a versatile, tough air-hardening grade that tolerates shock and is a sound default where the punch sees interrupted engagement or where the tool sees varied materials.
  • PS4 — a powder-metallurgy-grade tool steel selected when wear resistance and edge stability matter more than economy, typically in high-volume tooling.

Where the workpiece is abrasive or hardened, moving to a cobalt-bearing cutting grade is the analogous step — the logic is the same one behind the M35 and M42 cobalt grades in a drill line: harder, more abrasion-resistant, and more expensive, justified only by the duty.

The full punch family

Ball Lock is a system, not a single part: punches, retainers, die buttons, and accessories including backing plugs and ball springs. Knowing which parts are stocked in which steel is what keeps a tool rebuild on schedule instead of waiting on a reorder.

Order the review, not just the punch

The fastest way to reduce punch spend is to stop replacing geometry that is still good. When a punch fails early, the cause is rarely the shape — it is the steel, the clearance, or the alignment. A short review of the failing positions against the material being pierced and the duty cycle usually exposes a grade mismatch or a worn retainer. Fixing the cause costs less than reordering the symptom on a shorter and shorter cycle.
