Wear Plates and Flat Stock for Dies

A wear plate is sacrificial by design. It takes the sliding contact so the die shoe or the mold base does not.

That is the whole economics of the part: a wear plate is cheap and replaceable, a worn die shoe is not. Checking plates on a maintenance schedule costs a fraction of repairing the surface underneath.

Start with the function

Where plates go

Wear plates sit between moving die members and on the bearing surfaces of a die set, where two faces slide rather than clamp.

Flat stock

Lamina flat stock comes in standard thicknesses for cutting into wear plates, backing plates and stripper plates.

Alignment

Plate wear shows up as misalignment before it shows up as a broken die - the clearance opens and the punch stops cutting clean.

What to look for

Specify by thickness, width and length. Flat stock is supplied in standard thicknesses for cutting into wear plates, backing plates and stripper plates. Say whether the plate carries a ground working surface - an unground plate wears into the clearance faster than it wears out.

Unground versus ground. A ground working surface gives a known thickness and a known bearing area. Where a plate sets die clearance, that thickness is a dimension on the print, not an approximation.

Wear is a clearance problem. As a plate thins, the clearance it controls opens up. Symptoms arrive before failure: rougher cut edges, more burr, slugs that start to pull, punches that chip instead of shear.

Check alignment with the plate. Ball bearing die sets run tighter per-side clearance (0.0001-0.0003 in.) than plain bearing sets (0.0005-0.0015 in. per side). Plate wear opens both. If a die set that used to cut clean starts leaving burr, measure the plates before you re-shim the die.

Replace, do not rebuild. Wear plates are consumed by design. Keeping a set on the shelf beats scheduling a rebuild around a worn shoe.
