Why Mold Spring Selection Matters

Mold springs are one of the most frequently replaced components in injection molds and stamping dies. Selecting the wrong spring type, load rating, or material leads to premature failure, cycle time delays, and die damage. This guide covers the four spring types defined by ISO 10243, how to match load class to application, and when springs need replacement.

ISO 10243 Spring Types (Four Color-Coded Classes)

ISO 10243 classifies mold springs by load capacity and dimensional standard:

  • Light (Blue): Low load capacity. Stripper plates, light return applications. 1,000,000+ cycles before fatigue.
  • Medium (Red): Moderate load. Ejector return, core pull applications. ~1,000,000 cycles.
  • Heavy (Gold/Yellow): High load. Die cushion, heavy stripping. ~500,000 cycles.
  • Extra Heavy (Green): Very high load. Heavy stamping, extreme force applications. ~300,000 cycles.

Rule of thumb: Use the lightest class that meets your force requirement. Heavier springs carry higher preload and fatigue faster.

Material Options

Chrome Silicon (CrSi): Standard for most mold and die springs. Operating temp: -40F to 450F. Good fatigue life, moderate corrosion resistance. Most common choice.

Chrome Vanadium (CrV): Higher tensile strength than CrSi. Better fatigue life under shock loading. Operating temp: -40F to 425F. Preferred for high-speed stamping and heavy shock loads.

Stainless Steel (302/316): Operating temp: -40F to 500F. Best corrosion resistance for wet environments, medical mold cooling circuits, food-grade applications. Lower load capacity per wire diameter.

How to Calculate Required Spring Force

Basic formula: Required Force (lbs) = (Cavity Pressure x Projected Area x Safety Factor) / Number of Springs

  • Injection molding ejection: 3-5 tons per square inch of projected area
  • Stamping die stripping: 10-25% of press tonnage
  • Safety factor: 1.5x minimum for mold applications; 2x for high-cycle stamping

Installation Best Practices

  • Always use a spring pilot or pocket. Unsupported springs buckle under load and fail prematurely.
  • Minimum bore clearance: 0.015"-0.030" over spring OD.
  • Load to 80-90% of maximum deflection. Never compress solid.
  • Pre-load springs 5-10% in the extended position to prevent rattling.
  • Lubricate with moly-based or PTFE grease, especially in high-cycle applications.

When to Replace Mold Springs

Replace springs when you observe: cracked or chipped ends, visible set (permanent height loss), surface pitting or rust, loss of force, or after reaching fatigue-life intervals (1,000,000 cycles for light/medium, 300,000-500,000 for heavy). Proactive replacement during scheduled mold maintenance costs a fraction of catastrophic spring failure mid-production.
