Support Pillars for Guided Ejection

Ejection is where a lot of mold damage actually starts.

When the ejector plate travels a long stroke or pushes a heavy stack of components, it can rack - tipping slightly under the load and binding in its guides. The result is predictable: ejector pins bend or gall, the plate wears, and parts get pushed out unevenly. Guided ejection support pillars are the standard engineering answer.

What support pillars do

Support pillars, also called support columns, are installed between the ejector plates so that the plate assembly is carried on a set of pillars rather than relying on its edges alone. They add rigidity and guide plate travel, keeping the plate square to the mold axis even when the ejection load is off-center or the stroke is long. That protects the ejector pins, which are the most fragile link in the ejection chain.

We stock guided ejection support pillars in inch (SSP series, for example SSP07525) and metric (SSP, for example SSP-24x36) versions, with the number encoding diameter and length. The Progressive guided support pillar line is hardened 58-62 HRC and runs with non-galling guided ejector bushings; stainless steel and threaded counterbored options cover large molds.

Match the mold base, not the gap

Mold bases are built in both inch and metric systems, and the support pillar has to match the system of the tool - not just the measured gap. An inch-series pillar steps in inch increments; a metric-series pillar is dimensioned in millimeters. Mixing the two is a common source of a pillar that is a fraction of a millimeter too long or too short, which either binds the plate or leaves it unsupported.

Order the series that matches your mold base.

Sizing checklist

  • Measure the actual plate spacing at the pillar location, not the nominal mold size.
  • Specify the pillar diameter for the load - larger diameter for heavy stacks and long strokes.
  • Confirm the pillar length leaves correct pre-travel and full-stroke clearance.
  • Check that pillar bores in the plate are square to the plate face; a misaligned bore negates the benefit.

If you are chasing binding, pin damage or inconsistent ejection on a long-stroke tool, adding guided ejection support pillars is a high-value retrofit.

Send us the plate spacing, the stroke, and whether the tool is inch or metric, and we will size the pillars. Request a quote or call 814-438-7657.
